Position Description
The Executive Director of Preservation Kentucky, Inc. (PK) is the chief staff officer of the organization. The Executive Director reports to the Chair of PK and works closely with the Board of Directors in developing policies and planning activities and programs that fill PK’s mission. He/She has overall responsibility for implementing PK policies and carrying out PK’s activities and programs, as well as for maintaining the day-to-day operations of the PK office. He/She will also help guide the organization as it grows and as its objectives evolve.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Programs (advocacy and education)
- Serves as chief spokesperson for PK; in coordination with the Chair, represent PK at public meetings, hearing, activities, and programs and arranges for others to do so; serves as the primary contact in dealing with the media
- Develops and maintains liaison with the State Historic Preservation Office, local preservation organizations, state and local agencies, and other relevant organizations
- Coordinates PK’s role as the Statewide Partner of the National Trust for Historic Preservation
- Oversee PK’s programs, projects, and activities
- Monitors legislative and other governmental affairs that may affect historic preservation, prepare and present testimony and position papers on public issues, and works with the Advocacy/Legislative Committee to maintain an effective public advocacy program
- Oversees formulation and production of publications providing education and technical assistance about historic preservation, including PK’s quarterly newsletter, blog, website, etc.
- Oversees organization and implementation of conferences, seminars, workshops, tours, rambles, receptions, and other events, programs, and activities in consultation with the Fundraising Committee; plans PK’s regional preservation receptions and annual meeting
- Provides support and technical assistance, within the policy guidelines established by the Board of Directors to PK members, individuals and organizations concerned with historic preservation in Kentucky
- Works with the Board of Directors and PK standing and ad hoc committees to develop and implement new program initiatives
Administration
- Oversees all office operations, including recordkeeping, hiring, managing, and terminating staff and volunteers in coordination with the Executive Committee, and purchasing and maintaining supplies and office equipment
- Prepares reports to the Board of Directors for their quarterly and special meetings, and as otherwise directed
- Provides support for the Board of Directors at board and committee meetings; attends all Board meetings, except for Executive Sessions.
- Prepares, in consultation with the Board of Directors, a proposed annual work plan; assists the Board in short-and long-range strategic and fundraising plans and budget; and coordinates implementations of the approved work plan and other plans on a day-to-day basis.
- Prepares the PK annual report
- Oversees the maintenance and expansion of PK’s membership, including management of membership databases to ensure timely renewals and accurate information on which membership services can be based, in consultation with PK’s membership committee
- Keeps in contact with friends of preservation and large money contributors
Fundraising
- Works with the Board to create and implement long-term fundraising plan and budget
- Writes grant proposals and other funding requests; administers awarded grants and funding assistance
- Works with the Board and committees in planning and carrying out fundraising events and campaign’s
- Makes and keeps in contact with preservation friends and large benefactors
Financial Management
- Oversees the creation and management of all financial accounts to ensure that PK operates within its adopted budget; monitors compliance with grant restrictions, tax-exempt status requirements, investment policies, and any other relevant restrictions or guidelines, in consultation with the PK Executive committee
- Prepares financial reports for the Board, in consultation with PK’s Treasurer
- Prepares proposed annual budget for the Board in consultation with PK’s Executive Committee and committee chairs
Education and Experience
College degree preferred. Five years experience in one or more of the
following areas: architecture, historic preservation, economics, finance, public relations, design, journalism, planning, business administration, public administration, retailing, volunteer or nonprofit administration and/or small
business development.
